신윤서(루엥)는 동양화를 전공하고 시각디자인을 복수 전공하며, 전통과 현대를 아우르는 시각적 표현을 탐구해왔다. 그의 작업은 현대 사회에서 개인이 경험하는 고독과 불안을 주제로 하며, 세밀한 감정 표현과 강한 서사를 담고 있다.
특히, 캐릭터 디자인과 일러스트레이션을 통해 인간의 내면을 탐구하는 데 집중하며, 때로는 그로테스크하거나 코스믹 호러적인 분위기를 가미하여 강렬한 정서를 전달한다. 동양화의 정제된 기법과 현대적인 감각을 결합하여 독창적인 스타일을 구축해 왔으며, 다양한 매체와 협업을 통해 일러스트레이션의 확장 가능성을 모색하고 있다.
현재 그는 감정을 담은 캐릭터들과 그들이 살아가는 세계를 구축하는 데 집중하고 있으며, 일러스트레이션이 단순한 시각적 표현을 넘어 관람자와 소통하는 매개체가 되기를 바란다.

《비인간 생물군》 시리즈의 〈Mushroom〉 작품이다. 《비인간 생물군》 일러스트레이션 시리즈는 인간성이 상실된 사회와 관계의 면면들을 인간이 아닌 생물군에 빗대어 표현한 연작이다. 이 중 《Mushroom》은 공동체 구성원이 몇몇 죽고 버려져도 아무렇지 않게 이어져가는 공동체의 모습에서 영감을 받았다.
버섯은 땅 속에서 자신들끼리 전부 이어져 있고 공유하는 뿌리를 통해 서로 소통한다. 그러다가 특정 개체가 시들거나 죽으면 그들과 연결된 네트워크를 끊어버릴 뿐이다. 산업화 이후의 공동체에서의 개인도 이와 같은 상황에 처해있다고 느꼈다. 그들은 서로를 필요로 하기에 공동체라는 이름으로 묶여 있다. 그러나 그들은 서로를 돌보거나 바라보지 않는다. 2023년 대한민국에서 고독사한 사람은 3661명, 자살한 사람은 1만3978명이다. 우리는 우리의 공동체 내에서 누군가가 죽어가고 있다는 사실조차 모르며 그저 공동체에 매달려 살아가고 있다.

This piece, titled Mushroom, is part of the Nonhuman Biota illustration series. The series explores the aspects of a dehumanized society and its relationships, drawing parallels to nonhuman biological communities. Mushroom was inspired by the resilience of communities that continue functioning unaffected, even after some members die or are discarded.
Mushrooms are interconnected beneath the ground through shared roots, communicating through their underground networks. When a particular organism withers or dies, the network simply severs its connection. I found this phenomenon reflective of the situation faced by individuals in post-industrial communities. People are tied together under the label of "community" out of necessity, yet they neither care for nor truly see each other.
In South Korea alone, 3,661 people died in isolation and 13,978 people died by suicide in 2023. We often remain oblivious to the fact that someone within our community is perishing, clinging to the structure of the community as if nothing is amiss.
